New Zealand AIDS Foundation launches first HIV positive sperm bank

On World AIDS Day, December 1, 2019, DDB New Zealand, AIDS Foundation, Positive Women Inc and Body Positive together opened the world’s first HIV Positive sperm bank.

To tackle the deeply ingrained stigma around HIV positive individuals around the world, DDB New Zealand took part in opening a sperm bank with three donors who are living with HIV. It is scientifically proven that HIV positive individuals seeking appropriate treatment and have an undetectable viral load are incapable of transmitting the virus.
It was important to the agency to be a part of educating people all around the world to reduce fear and stigmatization of those living with HIV. “Stigma stems from a lack of understanding. We knew we needed to be bold in our idea if we were to challenge ingrained misunderstanding surrounding HIV,” said DDB ANZ regional CCO Damon Stapleton.
