Red Cross builds stark symbol of Australia’s bushfires

DDB Australia decorates downtown Sydney with a burnt tree for the Christmas holiday, reminding passersby and the world of the fires ravaging the country.

DDB Australia placed the ‘burnt Christmas tree,’ made of objects recovered from the fires, in one of the busiest neighborhoods in Sydney. Passersby were encouraged to donate to the Red Cross Disaster Relief and Recovery Fund. The installation was executed by City of Sydney, Scroundrel and DDB Sydney, alongside its key partners – Volkswagen Group Australia, Westpac and McDonald’s. At the time, 850,000 hectares of land had already been lost and ongoing bush fires numbered over 100.
